Today Americans everywhere pause for moments of silence to remember the brave souls who lost their lives on 9-11 and in the days following that historic day. We all pause to reflect on where we were when we heard the news, and what we were feeling when the second tower was struck....or the Pentagon. Our vivid flashbulb memories of these moments unite us.
Today we offer gratitude for the brave souls who risked everything to save the lives of others. Many of us will question whether we have the fortitude to take those same actions. Today we honor the fallen men, women and children in and around those planes and buildings, and we mourn for the families shattered by the unspeakable events of that morning. We also pray for the survivors still dealing with the aftermath of what they saw, the injuries they received, or the pollutants they inhaled rushing to the aid of another.
September eleventh is an important reminder to all of us, that life is short and in a blink it can change completely. This knowledge is as painful as it is precious. It is a reminder to focus on the things that really matter, hold your loved ones a little longer, and be in the moment whenever you can. It is also a reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the gratitude we owe to the men and women who risk their lives every day to keep us safe, and to rescue us when we need saving.
